chinese-inlaid-soapstone-jar-mother-of-pearl-landscape
Chinese Inlaid Soapstone Jar, Mother-of-Pearl Landscape
This Chinese mother-of-pearl-inlaid soapstone jar, likely dating to the late Qing or early Republic period, circa 1890–1920, combines stone carving, pictorial shell inlay and fitted metalwork. This example retains its fitted cover, swing handle and removable metal insert, with a carved seal-style mark on the base. It may have served as a cosmetic pot for rouge or pastes, or as a container for snuff, with the removable implement used to retrieve a small amount of the contents.

The jar also reflects the Chinese tradition of embellishing carved stone with mother-of-pearl. Individually shaped shell pieces form a landscape with architecture, trees and mounted figures, with fine incised lines supplying the detail. The pale shell stands clearly against the purple-brown stone, giving this small piece considerable presence without elaborate carving. Its combination of stonework, pictorial inlay and fitted metalwork provides a specific collecting interest beyond its decorative appeal.

Specs
Materials: soapstone, mother-of-pearl, metal.
Date: circa 1890–1920 (tentative attribution).
Origin: China.
Dimensions: 4¼" H, handle lowered × 3½" diameter.
Mark: carved base mark.
Includes: vessel, cover and small implement.

Condition
Very good condition.
