Based in Cuckfield, Hodson’s work is deeply influenced by her background in wildlife conservation, resulting in "delightfully rotund" animal figures that are highly recognizable and sought after by collectors. Created in 2017, these pieces exemplify her signature style: a hand-carved texture that mimics feathers on a heavy, rounded form, finished with her iconic hand-painted eyes.

The use of warm terracotta clay provides an earthy, grounded feel, while the minimalist details give each hen a distinct, quirky personality. As a matched set of varying sizes, these figurines offer a balanced vignette for a mantle or bookshelf. Signed and dated works by Hodson are prized for their unique blend of traditional folk craft and contemporary humor, making them a standout addition to any collection of modern studio ceramics.

Condition Report
These figurines are in good vintage condition with a minor note for accuracy. The larger hen is pristine with no flaws. The smaller hen has a small chip on one of the points of its red terracotta comb (please see close-up photos); however, due to the rustic, hand-carved nature of the piece, it blends in well and does not detract from the overall display. Both pieces are clearly signed and dated "2017" on the underside.

The Specs
Dimensions: Large Hen: 5.5" x 4"; Small Hen: 3" x 2.5"
Materials: Hand-carved Terracotta
Year Made: 2017
Maker: Helen Hodson

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1029/1327/8133/files/p1_0d1993fd-87a4-4891-9587-d2289d901969.jpg?v=1788580833
https://thegildedfossicker.com/products/signed-helen-hodson-terracotta-chicken-sculptures-modern-folk-art-2017-d80e5b68
