Vonokina Miniature

This authentic Russian lacquer egg originates from the village of Palekh, a region historically recognized for icon painting before its artisans transitioned their highly specialized skills to papier-mâché miniatures in the early 20th century. Dated 1971 and signed by the artist, O. Vonokina, the piece is meticulously crafted using traditional egg tempera paints and genuine gold leaf detailing. The composition depicts a pastoral folk scene of women in traditional dress gathered in a stylized forest setting, painted over a deep green background. Intricate gold filigree borders the egg and its accompanying pedestal stand, highlighting the single-hair brushwork characteristic of Palekh artistry. Producing such pieces requires months of preparation, involving multiple layers of lacquer over a pressed papier-mâché core, resulting in highly collectible examples of mid-century folk art.

Specs
Maker/Artist: Palekh / O.
