This specific carving is an interpretation of the Stuart of Appin crest, featuring the iconic "Belt and Buckle" circlet. The Latin motto, Nobilis Est Ira Leonis ("The Lion's Anger is Noble"), encircles a meticulously detailed Lion Rampant clutching a traditional Scottish dagger.

The reverse side bears the maker's hand-stamped signature and location, alongside a handwritten "Jamieson" inscription, suggesting this was a bespoke commission for a descendant of the Jamieson family (a sept of the Clan Stuart). Pieces by Miles are highly regarded for their "deep-relief" technique, which provides a three-dimensional quality rarely seen in modern reproductions. His work represents a significant era of Pacific Northwest woodcraft, blending traditional Scottish heraldry with American artisan skill.

Condition Report
This shield is in excellent vintage condition. The hardwood (likely walnut or mahogany) has been well-preserved, maintaining a deep, lustrous patina. There are no structural cracks or chips to the delicate carved elements. Minor surface scuffs are present on the back consistent with wall mounting over several decades.

The Specs
Dimensions: 14 inches (Height) x 12.5 inches (Width)
Weight: Approx. 3.5 lbs
Materials: Solid Hardwood
Year Made: Circa 1970s-1980s
Maker: Miles (Custom Carvings)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1029/1327/8133/files/p1_af732752-20fd-479c-8724-07bf0f717d91.jpg?v=1788580874
https://thegildedfossicker.com/products/vintage-hand-carved-stuart-of-appin-clan-crest-by-miles-port-orchard-wa-67a23bbc
