Matsagides

This exquisite work of Mediterranean pyrography originates from the prestigious Lambousa workshop in Cyprus, a premier mid-century center for the preservation of Cypriot folk craft. Based in the Lapta/Lapithos region, Lambousa became globally recognized for its high-quality wood-burning art, which served as a cultural bridge for the post-war Mediterranean tourism boom. This specific plaque is hand-signed by the artist, K. Matsagides, whose work is characterized by remarkable tonal depth and a romanticized dedication to capturing the island's domestic heritage.

The subject matter—a village woman engaged in the world-renowned "Lefkaritika" (Lefkara lace)—carries significant historical weight. As this 15th-century lacemaking tradition is now inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, depictions of the craft from the mid-20th century have become vital artifacts of Greek and Cypriot folk history. Signed Lambousa pieces like this are highly collectible, representing a vanished era of artisanal studio production that prioritized cultural storytelling over mass-market manufacturing.

Condition Report:
This piece is in excellent vintage condition. The natural wood plaque is structurally sound with no warping or splitting. The pyrographic detail remains crisp and dark with very little fading to the hand-burned pigments. There is light, age-appropriate surface wear to the stained border and minor scuffing on the reverse, consistent with a well-preserved piece from the 1960s.

The Specs:
Dimensions: 12" Width x 9" Height
Weight: 11 oz
Materials: Hand-burned natural wood, Walnut-tone stain, Original hardware
Year Made: Circa 1965
Maker/Artist: Hand-signed by K.
