Signed by the artist Romanova, the lid illustrates the classic Russian folktale "The Frog Princess" (Царевна-лягушка). The composition depicts Ivan Tsarevich alongside his brothers and the enchanted frog holding an arrow. A traditional black lacquer exterior contrasts with the vibrant red lacquer interior. Intricate gold leaf scrollwork borders the piece and accents the narrative scene. Palekh miniatures represent a direct lineage of icon-painting techniques adapted to secular folklore in the early twentieth century, making them notable additions to global folk art collections.

Specs
Maker/Artist: Romanova (Palekh)
Year Made: 1980
Materials: Papier-mâché, black and red lacquer, tempera paint, gold leaf
Dimensions: 1.75" H x 4" W x 2" D

Condition
The piece remains in excellent vintage condition with vibrant, intact paint and a properly functioning brass hinge.
