This 1946 bowl is Rookwood Pottery’s shape 6349, made in Cincinnati and marked beneath with the flame logo, Roman numeral XLVI and shape number. Maria Longworth Storer founded Rookwood in 1880, helping establish American art pottery as something both decorative and useful in the home. Rookwood became known for its carefully developed forms and glazes; here, the softly varied green glaze follows the scalloped rim and broad, low curve. The maker, dated mark and numbered shape give this piece a well-defined place in Rookwood’s mid-century work.
A metal pin frog sits inside the bowl to hold short stems in a low arrangement. Its broad opening allows flowers to spread naturally across the vessel rather than requiring a tall bouquet. The bowl also displays well without flowers, when its shape and glaze can be appreciated on their own.
