This exceptional antique porcelain plate commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Königlich Sächsische Bergakademie Freiberg (Royal Saxon Academy of Mining), the oldest university of mining and metallurgy in the world. Produced in 1916 by the esteemed Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, the piece serves as a striking example of early 20th-century German commemorative ware.
The vivid cobalt blue underglaze displays a highly detailed central figure of a miner dressed in traditional ceremonial uniform. Flanking the figure are the dates 1766 (the academy's founding) and 1916, alongside the classic crossed hammers insignia and traditional mining tools. The phrase "Glück Auf," the historic German miners' greeting wishing a safe return above ground, anchors the bottom of the plate. The reverse bears the iconic Meissen underglaze blue crossed swords mark, authenticating its prestigious origins, along with impressed mold numbers. This piece offers a rare intersection of elite porcelain craftsmanship and significant European industrial history.
