This figural chamberstick recalls the portable lights carried through a home before electric lighting became commonplace. Its curled handle lets the holder be carried without gripping the candle socket, while the broad tray catches falling wax. That combination made a chamberstick useful for moving from room to room, rather than leaving the light in one place on a table.

Here, a draped classical woman is worked in shallow relief across the tray. Keeping the figure low against the surface allows the ornament to share space with the practical wax catcher, rather than becoming a separate statuette. The fluted candle cup and curled handle complete a small decorative object built around a familiar household task. It would sit handsomely on a bedside table, with the figure visible beneath the candle.
