This antique Bohemian garnet bangle shows how many small stones can be arranged to create a substantial piece of jewelry. Bohemia developed a flourishing garnet-cutting industry during the nineteenth century, and closely set clusters became a characteristic way to use its small red stones. Here, the central ornament is built from individually held garnets, with smaller stones filling the spaces around the larger ones to form its pointed outline.

Tombac, a brass alloy used in period garnet jewelry, provides the framework beneath the stones. The hinged oval opens at the clasp, so it can pass around the wrist rather than needing to slide over the hand; the safety chain keeps the two sides connected when the clasp is released. Offered in this antique jewelry case, it brings the intricate work of garnet-set jewelry to a single, richly detailed bracelet.
