This Gothic Revival casket was made by Erhard & Söhne, the Schwäbisch Gmünd metalworking firm whose historicist boxes are now part of the local museum’s account of its work. The ES emblem and GERMANY stamp on the underside tie this example to the maker. Cast pointed arches and figures run around the lid and sides, turning a small jewelry box into an architectural piece.
Erhard & Söhne began in 1844 and became known for decorative metalwork that joined skilled design with practical household use. The hinged lid opens to an aged wood-lined compartment, so the box still serves the purpose behind all that ornament. Its maker’s mark and unusually elaborate relief make it especially rewarding to examine from every side.
