Spelter, known in France as régule, was popularized during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a highly detailed alternative to cast bronze, allowing for the widespread creation of intricate classical motifs during the Belle Époque. This pair of antique candlesticks utilizes cast putti to elevate torch-form sconces above darkened orbs and tiered geometric plinths. The pieces are anchored by heavy, solid turned white marble bases that provide significant physical weight and structural presence. An authentic, time-worn patina is evident throughout the gilt finish and the darkened spheres, highlighting the genuine age and historical context of the casting.
Specs
Year Made: 1900s
Materials: Spelter, brass, solid marble
Dimensions: 16.5" H x 5.5" W x 5.5" D
Condition
This pair exhibits authentic age-related wear, including a prominent marble chip on the back on one candlestick (pictured), flaking finish on the spheres, and a missing metal foot replaced with a felt pad. The tiers between the marble layer and the orbs are slightly loose and may need adjusting after moving, but tightening the mounts should resolve this. When in place, the candlesticks are stable.
