Antique German Stoneware Stein with Pewter Lid, Painted Marcobrunner Rheingau Vineyard Scene Insert

The history of this antique stoneware vessel is rooted in German breweriana and regional viticulture, highlighting the "Marcobrunner" vineyard—one of the most historically significant wine-producing sites in the Rheingau region. The pewter lid encloses a hand-painted ceramic insert portraying a traditional rural scene, signifying its origins as a regional commemorative piece. The vessel's age is confirmed by the specific combination of materials and construction techniques. The use of traditional salt-glazed stoneware combined with an applied clay relief (sprigging), alongside the darkened patina and specific hinge construction style of the pewter lid, are characteristic markers of German production circa 1890-1910.

The body consists of salt-glazed stoneware in a light tan hue, anchored by a prominent applied floral relief on the front. A traditional pewter thumb-lift allows for easy access and operates smoothly. The piece stands as a testament to historical European ceramic and metalworking traditions, offering tangible provenance for collectors of historic tavern wares and vineyard memorabilia.
