Crafted in 1903, this exceptional pair of solid sterling silver place card holders depicts the traditional theatrical characters Punch and Judy. A staple of British seaside culture and traditional puppetry, the anarchic Mr. Punch and his wife Judy trace their theatrical roots all the way back to the 16th-century Italian commedia dell'arte. Each cast silver figure is highly detailed, beautifully capturing the classic, exaggerated costumes and mischievous expressions of the historical puppet show.
These pieces were manufactured by the esteemed silversmiths Horace Woodward & Co. Ltd., a highly regarded firm operating out of the famous Birmingham Jewellery Quarter. Active from the mid-19th century until they were absorbed by Adie Bros in the 1920s, Horace Woodward & Co. became widely celebrated for their finely cast, highly detailed novelty silver during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Authentic novelty pieces bearing their mark are fiercely sought after by collectors of antique dining accessories.
The plateaued bases bear a clear, crisp set of English hallmarks. These include the anchor denoting the Birmingham assay office, the lion passant guaranteeing .925 solid sterling silver, the lowercase date letter "d" signifying the exact year 1903, and the distinctive cross-shaped cartouche containing the "H W & Co Ld" maker's mark. A solid silver ring sits securely mounted behind each character to hold menu cards or seating arrangements for formal dining settings.
