This floral jewelry casket was made by James W. Tufts’s Boston firm during its late nineteenth-century silver-plating years. The underside names Tufts, states “Quadruple Plate” and carries model number 3227, connecting the box to the numbered wares the firm advertised in its period catalogues. Floral relief and scrollwork give a useful dresser box the finish of a decorative piece.

The original yellow fabric lining remains inside, fitted to cushion rings and other small keepsakes. Its shaped interior and decorative metalwork show the attention Tufts gave to objects intended for the dressing table. The surviving lining and legible mark make this one particularly satisfying to open and examine.
