This large antique Japanese porcelain bowl was made in the Arita region during the late Meiji to Taishō period, circa 1890–1920. Hand-painted in underglaze cobalt, its interior centers on a bold geometric medallion surrounded by alternating patterned panels, stylized foliage, and a rhythmic floral border.
Arita has been Japan’s principal porcelain-producing region since the seventeenth century, with blue-and-white wares forming one of its most enduring traditions. The base bears a square fuku mark, meaning “good fortune”—an auspicious mark found on Arita porcelain rather than the signature of an individual maker or workshop.
Measuring 15 inches across, the bowl has the scale and presence of a substantial centerpiece while retaining a low, graceful profile. Visible brush variation and kiln irregularities preserve the character of its hand-worked decoration and historic manufacture.
