This oval jewelry casket was made by Jennings Brothers of Bridgeport, Connecticut, and is marked JB 1350 beneath the base. Edward and Edwin Jennings established the firm in the late nineteenth century; its cast-metal household pieces brought sculptural ornament to ordinary objects. Here, a lively figural scene and bordered panels continue around the box, so the decoration has interest beyond the lid alone.

The hinged top opens to a red fabric-lined compartment sized for jewelry or keepsakes. That lining remains a striking part of this example, even with the wear expected from use. The photographed maker and model mark connect this particular casket to the firm’s long tradition of decorative cast-metal work.
