Originating from the late Meiji or early Taisho period, this two-piece belt buckle serves as a prime example of Japanese Satsuma earthenware produced for the export market. The ceramic medallions present opposing dragons rendered in raised moriage enamel, applied over a traditional cream crackle glaze. Thick cobalt blue borders with heavy gold gilding frame the central design, establishing the historical accuracy and premium quality of the craftsmanship. The reverse utilizes a non-magnetic base metal mount—likely cupronickel or heavily plated brass—secured by a traditional hook-and-loop closure and a heavy link chain. Each metal backing displays a distinct impressed character mark, adding definitive provenance to the piece.
