This antique porcelain ginger jar is an authentic example of Kutani-ware (Kutani-yaki) from the Meiji period (1868–1912). The underside features the hand-painted iron-red "Dai Nippon Kutani Zo" (Great Japan Kutani Made) mark, a signature specifically used for high-quality export wares during Japan’s golden era of ceramic production.
The jar is decorated in the Kinrande (gold brocade) style, featuring a continuous landscape of cranes—symbols of longevity—navigating a lush garden of wisteria and irises. The artistry reflects the transition from traditional Japanese aesthetics to the ornate detailing demanded by Western collectors in the late 19th century. Unlike mass-produced mid-century pieces, the fine line work and varied enamel thickness indicate a hand-painted origin from one of the specialized kilns in the Ishikawa Prefecture.
