This sterling silver hand mirror has a deeply worked floral back, made to be seen whenever the mirror is set face down on a dressing table. The raised repoussé flowers and darkened recesses give the silver its depth, and the shaped handle continues the pattern below the glass. It is a small, usable example of the elaborate vanity silver popular around the turn of the twentieth century.
The glass shows the age of the piece, while the silverwork remains the reason to keep it in view. Its size makes it easy to hold and to display among other dressing-table objects.
Year Made: Circa 1890–1910
Materials: Sterling silver and mirror glass
Dimensions: 7½" L; mirror head 3½" across
Condition: The silver shows age-related darkening and surface wear. The mirror glass has spotting and a few scratches, as pictured.
