This balancing wine holder is a clever bit of physics and folk art. Attributed to the Australian maker Valilo (circa 1990s), it’s crafted from a solid piece of lacquered hardwood and hand-painted with a traditional-style kangaroo and dot motif.
The "magic" of the piece is in the angle of the cut. When you slide a standard 750ml wine bottle neck-first into the hole, the combined center of gravity sits directly over the base. This allows the bottle to hover horizontally, creating a sturdy yet seemingly impossible balance. It’s a great conversation starter for a countertop or home bar and is signed "Australia" in gold script on the neck.
