This distinctive studio pottery platter serves as a masterclass in the American Raku tradition. Signed by the artist Fuentes, the piece reimagines the classic Yin Yang symbol by integrating a stylized Koi fish into the composition. The design uses the high-contrast "resist" method, where the white paths are masked off to remain pristine against the carbon-heavy smoking of the firing process.
The artist, Fuentes, is recognized in the American studio pottery community for their mastery of the complex reduction firing technique. The lower "fish" section features a metallic, iridescent copper-green luster—a result of starving the kiln of oxygen—while the upper section showcases a heavy crackle "ice" glaze. The recessed "eye" of the fish provides a sculptural focal point that anchors the fluid, organic lines of the work.
