This salt-glazed stoneware teapot is a quintessential example of California studio pottery by artist Isaac Grimball. Working primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area, Grimball became known for his mastery of the salt-firing process, which produces the varied, "orange-peel" texture and iron-rich speckling seen on this vessel. The piece reflects the mid-century fusion of American craft and Japanese folk-art traditions, emphasized by the elegant bent bamboo handle and the hand-applied leaf seal. The base is twice-marked with Grimball's incised signature and his signature impressed leaf stamp.
