This original ink and wash work is by the Philadelphia-born artist Joseph Capozio (1927–2016). A veteran of World War II and a graduate of the Cannon School of Fine Arts, Capozio’s career spanned several major American art hubs, including San Francisco, New Orleans, and the Adirondacks. This specific piece holds significant provenance, originally purchased in April 1965 from the renowned Maxwell Galleries, Ltd. in San Francisco.

Capozio’s work is deeply informed by his background as a textile designer and his immersion in the performing arts. In San Francisco, he was a lead dancer in the Magana Baptiste East Indian Dance Troupe and a drawing instructor at the Walt Baptiste Integral Arts Studio. This "rhythmic spontaneity" is visible in the fluid, gestural lines of this composition, which captures a serene interaction between a central figure and several birds.
