This hand-thrown vessel is a signature work by Kevin Berg, a studio potter whose work explores the intersection of raw earth and volatile mineral chemistry. Known for his "High-Contrast" aesthetic, Berg’s pieces are increasingly sought after for their marriage of traditional ribbed terracotta and experimental, multi-layered "Lava" glazes.
Artist & Process
Unlike mass-produced ceramics, this 12-inch vase was created through a labor-intensive, multi-stage firing process. Berg begins with a wheel-thrown terracotta body, leaving the lower third unglazed to showcase the rhythmic "finger ridges" of the throwing process—a nod to the artist's hand.
The crown is then layered with a complex series of reactive glazes. Achieving this specific "Oxblood" red alongside iridescent purple and frothy seafoam green requires precise temperature control; these colors often "burn out" or turn muddy if the kiln fluctuates by even a few degrees. The result is a fluid, organic "glaze flow" that captures a moment of liquid movement, permanently frozen in glass.
