Sarawak Ceramic Bud Vase, Carved Brown Pottery, 4 Inch

This small ceramic bud vase has SARAWAK worked into the clay around its foot, a place-name detail referring to the Malaysian state on Borneo. Sarawak has a long pottery tradition, with decorated vessels among the wares made for visitors. Here the scrollwork is cut into the rounded body, and the warm brown glaze deepens in the recesses to bring out the carving.

The vase's flared mouth is well suited to a single dried stem, while its compact size makes it easy to place on a narrow shelf or side table. The carved place-name gives this little piece a character of its own, even without flowers.
