Victorian Revival Brass Fan Vase

This cast brass fan vase draws on the European tradition of ribbon-and-foliate ornament, combining a formal bow and garlanded pedestal with freely scrolling foliage. Ribbon bows and swags were established features of French Louis XVI decoration; their appearance here gives the vase a classical character.

The workmanship is particularly appealing in the transition from the solid, relief-decorated body to the pierced crest. Casting gives the ornament its depth, while the openwork allows each curling stem to remain distinct.
