Produced during the Republic Period, this Chinese export box is a classic example of early 20th-century craftsmanship designed for Western markets. The lid is anchored by a molded celadon Peking glass medallion, cleverly crafted to emulate the look and texture of hand-carved jadeite, depicting a serene bird resting among foliage. Four raised brass discs encircle the central bird motif, each cast with Chinese characters symbolizing traditional blessings of longevity and good fortune.
The heavy brass body displays deeply incised, wrap-around landscape scenes detailing mountains, bamboo, and sunbursts. Designed originally as a vanity or cigarette keep, the interior is carefully lined with a thin wood veneer and a soft felt base to protect delicate valuables. This piece retains a thick, authentic patina that speaks directly to a century of history.
