Dating to the early-to-mid 20th century, this Chinese bowl is a substantial example of plique-à-jour enamelwork—a demanding, centuries-old technique whose French name means “letting in daylight.” Fine metal wirework divides the vessel into hundreds of individual cells, which are carefully filled with vitreous enamel and fired. Unlike conventional cloisonné, the completed enamel has no solid metal backing. The enamel and its delicate framework form the walls of the vessel itself, allowing light to pass through like miniature stained glass.

Measuring 7½ inches across and 4¼ inches high, its generous scale gives the openwork remarkable visual presence. Floral panels in plum, green, turquoise, blue, and opalescent tones can be admired from inside and outside; near a window or warm light, the individual cells glow and cast jewel-toned reflections. Revived internationally around the turn of the 20th century, plique-à-jour found a distinctive expression in Chinese decorative vessels such as this luminous floral bowl.
