These exceptional ritual implements, known as I Cula Ni Bokola (cannibal forks), originate from the Fiji Islands and date to the mid-20th century. Carved from Vesi (Intsia bijuga), a sacred tropical hardwood traditionally reserved for chiefs’ homes and ceremonial objects, these forks are significant for their impressive "Chief-scale" size. Historically, these forks were the only instruments permitted to touch sanctified food, as high-ranking priests and chiefs were considered "tabu"—so holy that touching food directly would bring spiritual peril to commoners.

The craftsmanship is a masterclass in Fijian artisanal tradition, featuring intricate magimagi weaving on the handles. This labor-intensive lashing, made from pounded and braided coconut husk fiber, was a skill traditionally passed down through generations of men in the Lau Islands. The handles are crowned with stylized humanoid spirit figures, designed to act as spiritual conduits during ceremonial use. This matched pair, with its notable height and well-preserved fiber work, stands as a premier example of 1960s Melanesian woodcarving and a centerpiece for any collection of Oceanic art.

Condition Report
This pair is in museum-quality vintage condition. The dense Vesi hardwood has developed a rich, lustrous patina with no cracks, splits, or repairs to the delicate prongs. The magimagi fiber lashings are tight and fully intact, showing no fraying or age-related decay, which is remarkably rare for organic materials of this age.
