This soapstone sculpture features the traditional Indian "jali" technique, characterized by intricate openwork lattice carving. The piece is crafted from a single block of natural soapstone, showing varied earth-toned marbling throughout the body. A notable detail of this artisanal work is the smaller, solid elephant carved within the hollowed abdominal cavity of the larger figure. The trunk is raised, a classic symbol of good fortune, while the exterior is decorated with geometric and floral-inspired piercings that highlight the manual labor involved in its creation.
