Vintage Kyoritsu Japan Black Iris Vase, 9.5 Inch

This vintage vase is marked KYORITSU JAPAN on the base. The pale iris decoration is especially effective against the glossy black glaze: the flowers stand out without overwhelming the shape. Irises are a familiar subject in Japanese art, including the well-known iris screens by Ogata Kōrin.

The flowers continue around the body, so there is something to see from more than one side. The narrow neck suits a few stems, and the gold-toned edge gives the flared rim a refined finish. It is just as appealing displayed empty on a shelf or side table.
