This covered jar is an example of Moorcroft’s Anemone pattern, introduced by William Moorcroft in 1938 and carried forward by his son Walter. The family pottery grew from William’s work at James Macintyre & Co. into an independent business in 1913. Its reputation for hand-decorated English art pottery brought a royal warrant from Queen Mary in 1928, and Walter continued the business after his father’s death in 1945.
Moorcroft marks appear on both the base and the underside of the lid. The Anemone decoration uses the firm’s characteristic tubelining, with raised clay outlines defining the hand-painted flowers beneath the glaze. The flower has been associated with anticipation in some flower-language traditions, adding a little context to this established pottery design. With its decorated lid in place, the jar keeps small dressing-table essentials tucked away while giving the Anemone pattern a place in everyday use.
