This authentic Russian lacquer box originates from the village of Palekh, a region historically recognized for its master-level miniature tempera painting on papier-mâché. Signed by the artist Romanova, the lid illustrates the classic Russian folktale "The Frog Princess" (Царевна-лягушка). The composition depicts Ivan Tsarevich alongside his brothers and the enchanted frog holding an arrow. A traditional black lacquer exterior contrasts with the vibrant red lacquer interior. Intricate gold leaf scrollwork borders the piece and accents the narrative scene. Palekh miniatures represent a direct lineage of icon-painting techniques adapted to secular folklore in the early twentieth century, making them notable additions to global folk art collections.
